Beautiful identity and editorial design by Estúdio Daó and Pedro Veneziano in Brazil, for 44º Sesc Melhores Filmes, a cinema festival in São Paulo.
Sesc Melhores Filmes is São Paulo’s earliest and most traditional cinema festival, which early exhibits the most significant movies from the previous year to be seen or rewatched by the public. Created in 1974 during the dictatorship in Brazil, the movies are democratically chosen by vote — an important statement in that political context. The votes are cast by the public and a specialized panel, with critics and journalists from all over the country.
The challenge was to create an iconic visual identity that graphically marks this year's edition, exploring new approaches to the meaning and essence of cinema.
The proposal plays with the idea of movies being composed by a multitude of parts, diversely arranged into an infinity of outcomes. The designers developed a set of shapes by combining the same 44 elements in different ways, conceptually playing with the multiplicity of the cinema universe — each film is unique and open to various interpretations. The compositions are also graphically linked to the festival’s logo, created in 2016 by Bloco Grafico. They were thought out to be explored not just in print, but especially in digital and motion pieces. The identity was expressed in a catalog, a pocket schedule book, posters and other promotional pieces.
