Bespoke and off-the-shelf
Bark by Hangar Studio addresses a market where consumers are looking for well-designed products that can be produced to size without the bespoke price tag.
Using CNC machining, Bark are able to build furniture on demand out of existing models from their catalogue. This means that production runs more efficiently for both time and materials — production doesn’t need new designs, while Bark doesn’t need an inventory of furniture pieces.
The brand targets young audiences who are looking to add some pieces of interest to their interiors.
Approach
The shape of the wordmark was inspired from wood panels cut out of CNC machines, while the holes within the letters B and R are a direct reference to holes drilled for dowel pegs that help keep assembled furniture together. The bespoke wordmark is distinct, young and approachable and lends itself to adaptability with a B icon that can sit equally distinct in different contexts.
B for Bench
As we developed the B monogram we noticed a close resemblance to a bench as seen from the side. This further cemented the concept as a strong one for Bark’s identity.
Outcome
The dowel holes were further used in different brand elements and social media templates. The colour palette is warm, muted and contemporary which is equally paired with PP Eiko by Pangram and Pangram and supported by Switzer by Indian Type Foundry.
