Welcome to the new illustration system of Google Chrome OS created by illo.tv. The Italian motion design studio created an intuitive illustration system to empower and guide Chrome OS users throughout their complete digital experience. illo worked on many style explorations to find and refine the perfect approach to turn complex ideas into simplified, meaningful illustrations. The goal was to create imagery that would be both; consistent with the brand and empowering, scalable and inclusive for the users of Chrome OS, Google’s operating system.

The team designed almost 50 assets, a sticker sheet, countless gestures, icons, objects, and devices to include in this library designed to delight and to instruct. Plus, they experiment with the dark mode feature, analyzing the various line weights and color options to render the illustrations perfectly integrated and defined inside the operating system. Diversity, inclusivity, and scalability were core for the character designs illo created, keeping in mind the necessary alignment with the Google brand assets. The studio covered multiple situations, going from an abstract approach to a more realistic one for more functional contexts. They also animated some of the characters, adding an extra spark of dynamism to the whole library. Moreover, illo designed hands and gestures that would render the onboarding phase or the interface easier to navigate for Chrome OS users. Animation always helps, so they applied their motion design magic to some of them as well.

The project spread for six months, with plenty of time for research and fine-tuning. In the end, each asset contributed to a library striking the right balance between brand coherence and a mindful user-centered approach.
