Joelle McKenna designed The Time Machine - a unique approach to distributing digital content where users must pay with their time, not money in exchange for pieces of internet ephemera.
The Time Machine is a hacked 90s vending machine, reskinned and stocked with 300 unique collectible bags – a mix of internet content mined from familiar platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Youtube, news and dating apps – engraved on mirror. Each unit is priced 10-60 seconds. After a selection is made, a timer projected on the ground ticks down as the user waits for the content to drop. A built-in pause allows the user to reflect on the present moment and consider, "What's worth my time?"
This project plays with the boundaries of digital content creation by merging digital and physical – turning the consumption of everyday digital media into a physical experience.
